Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) in Arts

The 1st cycle degree programme offers students a sound basic education mainly in literary, linguistic, historical and artistic subjects. The degree programme provides a number of curricula, where students may focus on more specific fields of study: a classical curriculum (philology and linguistics, history, archaeology), a modern curriculum (philology and linguistics, literature, history, art), and an European literature curriculum. For this last curriculum a specific path may be arranged granting access to an equivalent French diploma. Thus from the first cycle students may add options indicating a better defined profile both from a professional view point and towards a 2nd cycle degree programme.

Studies are designed to give skills in reading and interpreting documents of various types (written and visual) across a very broad time-span, from the ancient era to modern times. Thus, the ability to translate a Latin or Greek text is coupled with that of being able to interpret an archaeological finding, interpret a visual work or a literary text (maybe in a foreign language), or hunt up a historical source. The classical curriculum studies ancient areas in depth: literature, history and archaeology; the modern curriculum covers from the medieval to the contemporary ages; the European curriculum offers a linguistic and literary education including the main European cultures.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

Graduates will have sound basic knowledge in the historical, literary and linguistic fields, with particular regard to Latin and Italian literature.

The above knowledge and understanding will come through attending lectures, practical activities, workshops, seminars and/or internships, as well as through home study, as prescribed by the Degree Programme Regulations.

Assessment is mainly through exams and/or intermediate tests (oral and/or written exams, tests, oral presentations).

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

Graduates:

- will know how to collect, classify and summarise historical, literary, artistic and bibliographical data and information from mixed sources;

- will know how to translate even complex Latin texts from any field (rhetoric, poetry, philosophy, history, science, drama);

- will acquire the skills for analysing texts and documents in an original in-depth manner , thanks to quali-quantitative practice in translation.

The ability to apply such knowledge and understanding will form through critical reading of texts set for home study and prompted by classroom activities.

Assessment is mainly through exams and/or intermediate tests (oral and/or written exams, tests, oral presentations).

MAKING JUDGEMENTS:

Graduates will understand and be able to evaluate the methods for linguistic, philological, literary, rhetorical, metrical and historical analysis of written documents. They will be able to deal with an ancient or modern/contemporary context in some depth, and from a diachronic perspective.

Judgement skills are developed and assessed above all through practical activities, organised seminars, internships, preparation of reports, as well as during the task assigned in preparation of the final exam.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Graduates:

- will have learnt how to process written and oral information and tailor it to a chosen audience;

- will possess the skills to communicate effectively in writing and orally, both in Italian and in at least one other European language (B1 level) and to discuss with exactness and appropriateness within specialist and non-specialist milieus.

Written and oral communication skills are developed during seminars, workshops and practical tasks and are assessed during each exam.

LEARNING SKILLS:

Graduates:

- will know how to update knowledge and expand their own education by suitable instruments, including IT resources;

- will know how to use the common office automation programmes.

The learning abilities acquired are a result of the entire period of study and are assessed continuously throughout the learning period, especially in the home study activities required for each exam, individual and/or group projects and tasks leading to the final exam.
