He is President of the Institute for the History of the University of Bologna (ISTUB); member of the Board of the Italian Centre for Studies on the Late Middle Ages - Accademia Tudertina di Todi (CISBaM); Member of the Board of the Deputazione di storia patria per gli Abruzzi; member of the Board of the Deputazione di storia patria per le province di Romagna; resident correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna; scientific advisor to the Institute of the Italian Encyclopaedia for the Dizionario biografico degli Italiani; member of the scientific committee of the Bullettino dell'Istituto storico italiano per il Medio Evo; member of the scientific committee of the Uomini e mondi medievali series of the CISAM Foundation of Spoleto; director of the series Studi e memorie per la storia dell'Università di Bologna, Opere dei Maestri and Universitatis Bononiensis Monumenta.
