Programme aims

The 2nd cycle degree programme in InternationalRelations and Diplomatic Affairs aims at training professional figures able to analyse, interpret,assess and manage those issues pertaining to the international dimension ofpolitical, economic and social phenomena in both the public and private sector.The programme therefore includes course units that study political systems andinternational historical, political and economic structures, also incomparative terms.
Each curriculum includes some core course unitsin politics and economics which provide grounding for more specialised courseunits.
The degree programme also includes groups ofinterdisciplinary course units - politics, history, economics and/or law - eachfocusing on a geographical or functional specialisation.
A wide variety of elective course units arealso available, many of which are delivered using a seminar format, in order toprovide interdisciplinary knowledge andpromote international mobility with flexible curricula that are compatible withinternational exchange programmes.
Overall the curriculum includes around tenlegal, historical and political course units, ten economic course units and tencourse units in political science using either a theoretical or an empiricalapproach, providing one of Italy's broadest curricula in this degree class(52).
All students are required to study a secondlanguage in addition to English for two years (assessed at level B2 at thestart of the programme) and possibly a second language studied during the firstcycle (therefore the third language for first cycle graduates in politicalsciences). Study may include both the acquisition of the four linguistic skills(reading, writing, listening and dialogue) and compulsory attendance oflessons, in line with the criteria specified within the degree programme. Thelanguages available under the degree programme are: French, German, Spanish andRussian. In addition, in collaboration with the Department of Interpreting andTranslation, some non-European language are available (Arabic, Chinese).
The Degree Programme is divided into threecurricula:
The first and most traditional, InternationalPolitics and Security, focuses on the study of international relations,international security, comparative foreign policy and regional dynamics in keygeographical areas.
The second, Global Politics and Governmentfocuses on the dynamics of globalisation, their impact via transnationalprocesses on the policy making mechanisms of national and supra-nationalstakeholders.
The third, delivered in English, InternationalPolitics and Markets, provides the tools to analyse the relationship between stateand market, both nationally, through comparative studies, and internationally.It also provides competence in private, commercial, business and financial law,allowing graduates to interact with private business firms, particularly those operating within international markets.

Course units
Admission requirements
To be admitted to the 2nd cycledegree programme in International Relations a candidate must hold a 1stcycle degree, or other suitable qualification obtained abroad, in one of thefollowing subject areas: anthropology, communication, culture, demography,economics, philosophy, geopolitics, law, literature, languages, politicalscience, psychology, sociology, history, gender studies.
To be able to profitably attend the 2nd cycle degree programme inInternational Relations and Diplomatic Affairs, students must have:
- Knowledge of the English language (TOEFLpaper 550, TOEFL computer based 213, TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.0, Cambridge FCE,Trinity ISE - Integrated Skills II, Trinity GESE 8, or at least 12 CFU, alsofrom workshop activities, in subject area L-LIN/12 with an average grade of atleast 24/30, or level B2 certification issued by a University Linguistic Centre.
- Essential computer skills (at least 2 CFU incomputing, including laboratory work; or ECDL)
- adequate personal competence and skills.
If astudent does not hold a degree in one of the above-mentioned areas, admissionto the 2nd Cycle Degree Programme is conditional upon a preliminary assessment by a committee in order to ascertain the requiredcompetence and skills. The committeewill examine candidates' qualifications, curriculum vitae and motivations,and will schedule an interview if necessary.Admission procedures are indicated in the call for applications, and will alsobe published on the University portal.
