Sonia Lucarelli is Professor of International Relations and European Security at the University of Bologna and a member of the Board of Directors of the Istituto Affari Internazionali and co-coordinator of the Italian Standing Group on International Relations. She is responsible for the MoU Unibo-NATO Allied Command Transformation and coordinates the University's participation in the Europaeum consortium. She has been a member of the Board of the European International Studies Association (2021–2025), a Resident Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies, and a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute. Her research interests include the international role and external image of the European Union, European security, and the crisis of the liberal order. She has directed numerous research projects funded by the EU, NATO, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Volkswagen Stiftung. Her work has been published in journals such as Journal of Common Market Studies, International Affairs, West European Politics, etc. Her most recent book is The Handbook of European Union Governance, co-edited with James Sperling (2025).
