Sonia Lucarelli is Full Professor at the University of Bologna and member of the Board of Directors of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). At Bologna she is responsible for the MoU with NATO’s Allied Command Transformation and for participation in the Europaeum consortium. She has been Board member and Executive Secretary of the European International Studies Association, Resident Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Bologna, and Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute. In 2025 she was named
Bologna Ambassador for her role in promoting international conferences in the city. Her research focuses on the EU’s international role, European security, identity and foreign policy, migration, and global justice. She has coordinated major international projects (including
GLOBUS,
PREDICT,
GARNET,
EU-GRASP) and obtained grants from NATO, the Volkswagen Stiftung, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and IAI. Her latest book is the
Handbook of European Union Governance, co-edited with James Sperling (Edward Elgar, 2025).
