Laurea Magistrale (Second cycle degree/Two year Master - 120 ECTS) in Asian and African Languages and Cultures

The 2nd cycle degree programme in “Asian and African Languages and Cultures” offers an opportunity to acquire more advanced knowledge of the cultural, artistic and literary history and philosophical and religious thought of a non-European civilisation in Asia or Africa, as well as to acquire active and passive knowledge and skills of at least one Asian or African language. Students may select a cultural area and a preferred line of study (philology and literature, history of art, history of thought, archaeology, history, etc.) with a view to the preparation of a final thesis, which must be relevant to the cultural and scientific individual path and will generally involve a period of study abroad.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

Graduates will possess more advanced knowledge of the general history, philosophical and religious thought, cultural, artistic and literary history of a non-European civilisation within Asia or Africa.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

Graduates:

- will know how to critically assimilate scientific texts of humanistic studies pertaining to the chosen cultural area;

- will know how to deal in an original way with the subjects related to the chosen historical-geographical area;

- will know how to assess and organise book and printed material pertaining to the studied area, including the original language;

- will be able to recognise, catalogue and interpret relevant history of art and archaeological material.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS:

Graduates:

- will know how to gather, interpret and communicate (at a specialist and non-specialist level) information pertaining to the chosen historical-geographical area, achieving valid judgement skills in the historical, philosophical, literary, art history, ethical and social areas;

- will be able to identify the driving factors of conflict and social cohesion within non-European cultural groups regarding the problems of immigration and interculturalism;

- will know how to recognise and overcome prejudice.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Graduates:

- have good active and passive knowledge of at least one language of the chosen area of study;

- will know how to communicate at an advanced level in writing and orally, critically explain the historical and linguistic contents of non-European cultures and effectively apply the knowledge in the field of publishing and writing;

- will be able to communicate at an advanced level, writing and speaking a foreign European language (level B 2).

LEARNING SKILLS:

Graduates:

- will have learnt how to continue learning on their own in the area of study and to use scientific texts for further studies and application of knowledge;

- will know how to organise materials for research purposes according to the historical–critical methodology, including digital means;

- will identify the subjects that the scientific community considers important for the field of study, and update their knowledge from scientific magazines of the sector.

- will know how to consult electronic databanks.
