Laurea Specialistica a ciclo unico (Single second cycle degree) in Medicine

The structure of the degree programme allows for the acquisition of theoretical knowledge on the structure and function of the organs and systems, causes of illnesses, diagnostical procedures and methods of controlling human pathologies. Furthermore, it allows for the acquiring of skills for detecting and critically assessing the data pertaining to the health status and illness of the individual based on a unified vision extended also to the social-cultural dimensions and acquisition of the skills of communicating with clarity and humanity with the patient and their relatives, as well as overseeing the interests of the individual and the public in general as provided for by the law and the social protection system. The method and quality of education rightfullylead also towards research. Lastly, it allows for the acquisition of the operating procedures for putting into practice the skills acquired.

In short, the Degree Programme forms graduates provided with the knowledge, methodology, professional, decision-making, and operational autonomy necessary for operating as Physician in various professional roles and fields, to access Schools of specialisation and to continue education in an ongoing and effective way.

Graduates of the 2nd cycle degree programmes in Medicine and Surgery must be provided with:

- the necessary basic scientific and theoretical-practical training according to directive 75/363/CEE to operate in the medical profession and with the methodology and knowledge necessary to continue in education,

- a level of professional, decision-making and operational autonomy generated by an educational course characterised by a holistic approach to the health problems of healthy and sick people also in relation to the chemical-physical, biological and social environment surrounding them,

- the essential theoretical knowledge generated by the basic sciences with a view to their subsequent professional application;

- the skills for detecting and critically assessing from a clinical point of view based on a unified vision extended also in social-cultural and gender dimensions, the data pertaining to the health status and illness of the individual and interpreting the physiopathology and pathologies of organs and systems based on basic scientific knowledge;

- abilities and experiences, including self-assessment ability, in order to meet and solve responsibly the priority health problems from the preventive, diagnostic, prognostic, therapeutical and rehabilitative point of view;

- knowledge of the ethical and historical dimensions of medicine; the ability to communicate with clarity and humanity with the patient and relatives;

- the ability to collaborate with various professional figures in group medical activities;

- the ability also to apply the principles of medical economy in medical decisions; the ability to recognise health problems of the community and intervene in a skilful manner.
