You are pursuing a PhD programme at University of Bologna

Each PhD Student has two institutional e-mail addresses that the University of Bologna uses to send institutional communications; as such, PhD students must check their in-boxes frequently.

The first, nome.cognome@studio.unibo.it, is issued on application for the programme and does not expire. These credentials allow access to the following service:

• Studenti Online, where PhD Students can pay tuition fees and download certificates and self-certifications.

The second, nome.cognome@unibo.it, is issued following matriculation. For example, these credentials allows access to the following services:

• PhD Student Application useful to register for training activities and upload the annual reports required for the end of the year;
• IRIS catalogue, where PhD Students can obtain an ORCID code and input data about their scientific production;
• CedoliniWeb, where PhD Students can find the credit slips for their monthly scholarship payments and supplements for foreign mobility, if applicable, and download the combined certificate;
• personal website, which PhD Students can customise to provide useful information, such as CV, publications etc.;
• AMS PhD theses, which is used to file PhD theses in electronic form at the end of the PhD programme.

N.B. Usernames and passwords are disabled if not used for 6 months. If usernames and passwords are disabled or lost, PhD Students may request their reactivation by connecting to the SLD application.

At the end of their studies (upon obtaining their degree, withdrawal or exclusion), PhD Students may continue to use their institutional e-mail address for the following 6 months. Access to Studenti Online and to Cedolini to download the Income Certification (CU), remains possible via the account @studio.unibo.it.

The student registration no. of PhD Students:

• is indicated on the badge and on the Studenti Online application, by selecting the relevant career;
• is useful for career management and for communication with the PhD Degree Unit of the Education and PhD Programme Division.

All PhD Students have their own institutional badge, issued upon matriculation.

This is a personal magnetic card, valid for the entire duration of the PhD programme, that allows access to the university structures, such as libraries and laboratories, once activated by the department concerned, also to departmental facilities.

Issuing of badges

You can print your badge using the QR code sent to your nome.cognome@studio.unibo.it account at one of the self-service machines available in the university. 

Lost, stolen, damaged or de-magnetised badges

If a badge is lost, stolen, damaged or de-magnetised, the PhD Student may request a replacement by writing to aform.udottricerca@unibo.it and attaching:

• the application form for a replacement badge (in Italian) [.pdf 115 KB], duly completed and signed
• the declaration in place of sworn oath (in Italian) [.pdf 327 KB] if lost or stolen;
• a scanned copy of personal identity document.

After submitting the application for a replacement, upon payment of the duplicate fee of € 10, to be made on the Studenti Online application, a new QR code will be issued.

Returning the badge at the end of your career

The badge must be returned to the department concerned following completion of the PhD programme, or withdrawal.

In the “Il mio portale” section of the Intranet Portal (restricted access, only with @unibo credentials) PhD Students can:

• check their personal data (“Personal data”);
• change their institutional addresses (work telephone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, website addresses etc.) and passwords;
• change their residence and domicile.

The University makes a personal website available to each PhD Student for the publication of their scientific CVs and information about their activities at the University.

Publication of the CV is compulsory, as it is required by the Transparent Administration regulations (Articles 26 and 27 of Decree 33 dated 14 March 2013 and subsequent amendments).

What is it and can I apply

A PhD co-tutorship is an international collaboration that takes place through bilateral agreements signed by two universities located in different countries. You will have the opportunity to carry out research at both universities and under the joint responsibility of two supervisors, one from each university. At the end you will obtain the title of Doctor of Philosophy in both universities, with an explicit mention of the collaboration with the partner university.

Main elements of a co-tutorship

• Joint programme and joint supervision: the PhD student carries out his/her research activity under the joint responsibility of two supervisors, assigned by the home university (i.e. the university of first enrolment) and the host university.
• Mobility plan: the research period spent at the two universities must be as balanced as possible; it is planned jointly by the two supervisors.
• Final discussion: generally a single one (usually held at the administrative office of first enrolment); the composition of the committee is structured to ensure a fair balance of members from the two partner universities in the agreement.
• Dual qualification: both universities award a PhD qualification, explicitly mentioning the collaboration with the partner university.

If the stay lasts more than one month, PhD students who have the University of Bologna as their administrative office must fulfil the requirements placed on PhD students for stays abroad.

Application requirements

• Enrolment in the first year, or start of the second year at the home university;
• Second-level qualification or foreign qualification recognised as equivalent;
• Funding with a minimum duration of one year;
• Part of the PhD programme must be carried out at the host institution.

How to apply

PhD Students need to agree on the proposal with the supervisors at both the home and the host university, and must facilitate contact between the universities.

PhD Students must:

• identify the foreign host university and the relevant PhD course of interest;
• identify a teacher from the above-mentioned university who is willing to act as co-supervisor and obtain their acceptance;
• submit the activation proposal to their supervisor, who will present it to the Academic Board for approval.

Once the procedure has been completed, the PhD Unit will manage the negotiation of the agreement, subject to approval of the PhD programme by the Academic Board.

For stays abroad lasting at least thirty continuous days, it is possible to apply for a scholarship increase.
