Access requirements for the Programme
To be accepted on this degree programme one needs to have a 5-year high school leaver's certificate or foreign qualification recognised as compatible, or a 4-year high school leaver's diploma plus catch-up year or, where that is no longer being run, proof of having made up an additional learning requirement.
The degree programme restricts the number of students according to the resources available. The number of students who may enrol and the process of selection will be published every year by a special Call for applications.
Students who pass the admission test and wish to include English in their study plan must show they are at least B1 level in the Common English Language Framework. This will be ascertained by the Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT), according to rules and a procedure to be published every year on the School website. The test will also be used to place ‘B1+' students in the Language Practice group most suited to their own level.
The B1 requisite may also be proved by showing the teachers in charge of English Language and Linguistics one of the following certificates, issued not more than 24 months previously:

TOEFL iBT: 65
TRINITY (only Integrated Skills Exam): ISE (II)
Students who choose English as their first or second language may only sit the OOPT once. The above regulations cannot be applied retrospectively; students registering in previous years will continue to abide by the rules set for the academic year in which they registered, as far as choosing English as the third language is concerned.
Every year the Degree Programme website will provide a small booklist of grammar books suitable as practice material for the requirements of the OOPT.
One also needs to possess good comprehension and an appropriate ability to write summaries of texts in Italian. This ability is tested along with the admission test. The pass-mark in this will be set by the Degree Programme Board from year to year and posted in the Call for applications.
Students allowed onto the programme with a lower mark than the year's pass-mark will be assigned an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA).
OFA students must do a special course in Italian language structures. Passing the final test satisfies the OFA requirement.
Students with an OFA to do may enrol for the second year on condition they pass the OFA test by the end of March in the academic year subsequent to that of their first-year enrolment. The OFA test will be waived if by that term (end of March, second academic year) the student has passed all the exams scheduled for the first year of his/her study plan (excluding any elective exams chosen by the student). Anyone who has not passed the OFA test or passed all the above exams by that deadline will have to re-enrol for the first year as a repeating student.
The Degree Programme Board may decide to exempt students from the knowledge test determining OFA assignments in the following cases:
- withdrawal,
- loss of student status,
- claim to exercise the previous system option,
- possession of an academic qualification or having done training at a foreign university,
- switching from another degree programme at Bologna University,
- transfer from another university.
The judgment is based on criteria set by the Degree Programme Board every year and posted on the University Portal.
The principles governing such criteria are compatibility of background knowledge with the access requirements and the fact that the professional grounding obtained is not out of date.
