84278 - CELLULAR BIOLOGY AND GENETICS LABORATORY (G1)

Anno Accademico 2023/2024

  • Modalità didattica: Convenzionale - Lezioni in presenza
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Laurea Magistrale a Ciclo Unico in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 9210)

Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

Summarize the principles and applications of relevant cellular, molecular and genetic techniques.

Contenuti

Students have the chance to experience research first hand alongside experts in their fields. They utilize the main tools and techniques in molecular and cell biology including DNA extraction, cloning and sequencing. They can access the main biological databases for human research, design an experiment and discuss key steps, benefits and pitfalls in order to improve critical thinking skills.

Lab activities will consist in:

- learning the use of the main query commands of the online database Pubmed

- gene structure analysis (using the main biological databases)

- DNA extraction

- gene expression studies

- amplifying DNA: polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

-DNA sequence analysis

- journal club

Testi/Bibliografia

Schemes and articles will be provided during the course.

Metodi didattici

- Lab activities

- Virtual experiences, video, teamwork

- Discussion of some topics.

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the frequency of this training activity requires all students to carry out modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode and to participate in a third specific training module on safety and health in the places of study / internship. Indications on the dates and methods of attendance of the third module will be communicated to the students by the training centers.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

Discussion at the end of each activity. Lab activities can be used by teachers to enhance intended learning outcomes of the integrated course.

Cellular Molecular Biology and Genetics (I.C.)

Cellular Biology and Genetics + Lab: the final examination consists of an oral dissertation (two questions randomly selected) to assess achievement of the skills detailed in the learning outcomes. The student is asked to demonstrate skills in terms of synthesis, analysis and critical appraisal of the topics covered in the course. The maximum score obtainable is equal to 30 cum laude. The exam is considered passed with a minimum score of 18/30.

Molecular Biology: the students will be evaluated by written exam.
The written test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions. Students will receive 1.55 points for each correct answer, 0 points for incorrect or missing answers, and an intermediate score for partially correct answers. The time available to students for the written test is 30 minutes. During the test, the use of support materials, such as textbooks, notes, computer supports, is not allowed. The maximum score obtainable by providing all correct answers is equal to 30 cum laude. The test is considered passed with a minimum score of 18/30.

The final mark will be determined as weighted average mark (weights are the relative course credits).

E.g.

Cellular Biology and Genetics + lab (7+1 credits): 27/30

Molecular Biology (2 credits): 30/30

Weighted average mark: (27*8)+(30*2) / 10 = 27.6

Final mark: 28/30
