Specific learning outcomes of the Programme
The specific learning outcomes of the 1st cycle degree programme in Automation Engineering aim to produce professional figures with a solid basic and specific background able to cover technical management and design roles in companies which require knowledge of sizing and implementation of medium-to-highly complex architectures, automatic and robotic systems, automation processes and plants which integrated computer components, measuring, transmission and actuation equipment. Automation engineers differ from other classes of information engineers in their possession of interdisciplinary knowledge of automatic, mechanical, computing, electronic and electro-technical sectors. Graduates acquire a solid grounding in the methodological and operational aspects of basic sciences and engineering, privileging the specific aspects of automation without neglecting more general areas of study; they are guided through a process of knowledge and understanding of the fundamental methods and instruments for designing components, systems and processes for automation using an interdisciplinary approach. Their training is completed and integrated with significant experience in the laboratory, elements of contemporary business culture and knowledge of a foreign language. Automation Engineering graduates possess post-secondary knowledge and understanding in automatic, mechanical, computing, electronic and electro-technical sectors, are able to use advanced text books, and understand cutting-edge topics regarding the use and design of highly dynamic automatic machinery, robotics, the car industry, control and actuation systems based on modern and innovative technologies.
Moreover, the international curriculum (AlmaTong) leads to a dual degree: the 1st cycle degree in Automation Engineering from the University of Bologna and a BSc in Automation Engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai, China. Students enrolling in this curriculum will not only undertake course units in the English language during the final two years of the programme but will also have the chance to gain extensive experience in the industrial field during the compulsory internship, and acquire considerable transversal communication and interpersonal skills.

Automation Engineer, processing and control systems expert
Function in a professional context:
Automation engineers have in-depth interdisciplinary knowledge of the automatic, mechanical, computing, electronics and electrotechnics sectors, and are able to conceive, design, implement and start up automation systems for machines, processes, systems, products and services. Automation engineers therefore have specific skills that allow them to work effectively in different areas, as systems analyst and/or designer and/or technician in all fields of application in which automation technologies and principles play an important role.
In this context, one function of the automation engineer is that of processing and control systems expert. Automation engineers work in the design, management and implementation of real time acquisition, processing and control systems typical of computer-based automation systems. Their key competencies lie in the understanding and modelling of complex system dynamics and the development of real time software and algorithms for supervision and automation. Automation engineers are also strongly oriented to the integration of different computer and electronic technologies that are functional to the automation of small and large-scale industrial installations.
Given these functions, the role is identified by the ISTAT professional groups 2.2.1.3.0 and 2.2.1.7.0 listed below.
Competencies associated to the function:
Specialist knowledge, skills and competencies are required to perform the above functions in the technical and engineering fields.
Specifically, these professional figures are associated to the following competencies:
- Knowledge of hardware and software for real time processing and control systems;
- Knowledge of embedded systems, PLC platforms, data acquisition systems, fieldbuses, distributed control systems, FPGA;
- Real time programming instruments and techniques. They have sound knowledge of the principles of concurrent computing and knowledge of the main programming languages (C, C++);
- Modelling of dynamic systems and the principles of control theory, with specific knowledge of the techniques and instruments for modelling and simulation;
- Processing and management of analogue and digital signals;
- Ability to understand the dynamic phenomena of complex mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic and electrical systems;
- Self-learning and lifelong learning skills, and appropriate transversal
communication-interpersonal, organisational, managerial and programming skills.

Automation Engineer, Industrial Automation Specialist

Automation engineers therefore have specific skills that allow them to work effectively in different areas, as systems analyst and/or designer and/or technician in all fields of application in which automation technologies and principles play an important role.
In this scenario, one professional area of automation engineering is that of industrial automation, referring specifically to the conceptual design, implementation and start-up of mechanical automation systems for machinery, processes and plants. These automation engineers are able to blend purely mechanical competencies, interpreting mechanical drawings, with electrical/electronic/computer competencies, understanding the respective fields and playing an essential role in the integration and improvement of the respective areas. The specific competences acquired also allow automation engineers to design simple devices and components, acting as mechanical designer in small businesses working with designs of limited mechanical complexity.

Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for the degree programme
Admission to the 1st cycle degree programme in Automation Engineering is subject to the possession of a five-year secondary school diploma or equivalent suitable qualification obtained abroad, or a four-year secondary school diploma and diploma for the relative supplementary year, or, where no longer active, will be assigned additional learning requirements by the Degree Programme Board on a case-by-case basis.
Admission to the degree programme is also subject to the possession of strong oral and written Italian language skills, logical reasoning skills, knowledge of and ability to use the main results of elementary mathematics and the foundations of experimental sciences.
This shall be assessed as described below:
The 1st cycle degree programme in Automation Engineering may have restricted access, depending on the available resources.
1.1. Entrance exam to assess basic knowledge for open access degree programmes
Students must sit an entrance exam to assess basic knowledge, the methods of which will be published on the University Portal. Students registering with a score of less than the minimum threshold indicated on the University Portal will be assigned additional learning requirements (OFA), learning activities covering the knowledge of those subjects included in the first year course units. Additional learning requirements (OFA) are deemed to be completed by passing a specific exam, the methods and terms of which are indicated on the University Portal. At least three exam sessions are expected to be held for additional learning requirements during the academic year.
The deadline for the completion of additional learning requirements is set by the University Bodies and published on the University Portal. Prior to the completion of additional learning requirements, students may in any case sit the exams scheduled for the first year. Students not completing the additional learning requirements by the deadline shall be obliged to enrol in the first year of the study programme again, and will not have the right to apply for shortened programme status.
In the event of:
- Withdrawal from studies;
- Loss of student status;
- Application to opt out of previous degree programme systems;
- Possession of an academic qualification obtained from or learning activities carried out in foreign universities;
- Transfer from another degree programme at the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna;
- Transfer from another university, students are exempted from sitting the entrance exam if in previous academic years they passed the exam at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bologna or another Engineering Faculty that is a member of the Cisia Consortium, or have passed entrance exams for restricted access programmes in architecture, but without subsequently registering.
In the event of accepting the transfer application beyond the usual terms, students who have not been exempted from sitting the entrance exam will be assigned additional learning requirements.
1.2 Entrance exam to assess basic knowledge for restricted access degree programmes
If the programme is run on a restricted access basis, the number of places and selection methods are published annually in the relative call for applications.
Students shall be required to sit an entrance exam to assess their knowledge in order to register for the 1st cycle degree programme. Students registering with a score of less than the minimum threshold laid down in the call for applications will be assigned additional learning requirements (OFA), learning activities covering the knowledge of those subjects included in the first year course units.
