Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

Students learn the basic theoretical and practical approaches of curating exhibitions and they explore various curatorial methodologies and strategies for different forms of exhibitions (monographic, thematic, collection presentations, performances, media-based and interactive projects, etc.). They become also familiar with social practice and urban projects in public contexts, and with alternative or artist-run spaces. Through readings and discussions, viewing assignments and journals, field trips, and guest lectures, they are able to analyse the role of curators and cultural producers today.

Contenuti

The exam for Curatorial Practices and Contemporary Art consists of two courses: Curating the contemporary and LAB - Curatorial Practices. Curatorial Practices and Contemporary Art is an integrated exam of 12 CFU (6 CFU+6 CFU) and the verification and evaluation of the preparation follow the procedures laid down for an integrated exam, i.e. they must be taken in the same session and students must then register simultaneously for both exams.

LAB - Curatorial Practices focuses on the recent art realized in public spaces trying to address both the theoretical and critical aspects of art related to this subject of studies, and the more organizative and planning aspects in which we will try to conceive a series of interventions.

In the most theoretical section, a case study will be agreed with each student and will be exhibited in the classroom - in a conference simulation - in order to bring to light the contradictions and potential of some aspects of contemporary art.

For the second part, in addition to a visit to some recent public art interventions, an attempt will be made with individual students (or groups of students) to develop a possible series of artistic interventions that could be carried out in the city of Bologna.

Testi/Bibliografia

A handout that will contain a collection of essays on the subject of the class will be available on “Insegnamenti on Line” (https://iol.unibo.it) at the beginning of the lessons.

Metodi didattici

Due to the restrictions imposed by the current health emergency, teaching will be carried out with “traditional" teaching methods, i.e. the teacher will always be present in the classroom designated for teaching, students will alternate in attendance according to a schedule of shifts being defined (more detailed information about the shift and how to access the lesson in attendance will be provided later). It will always be possible to connect remotely and follow live streaming of the lessons in the classroom by TEAMS platform.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

The exam consists in the elaboration of an essay on a case study of a work of art/public art exhibition; or, on the same theme and only for those who attend, the construction of their own curatorial project. In both cases the subject must be agreed with the teacher at least two months before the exam. The paper will be analyzed to evaluate the critical and methodological skills acquired by the students.

Students will be assessed especially considering whether they have acquired ability to orientate within the visual and written sources recommended in the bibliography and on the AMS Campus online platform, for finding useful information to illustrate topics and issues by connecting them.

What will be assessed:

- Mastery of the contents

- Ability to historically frame concepts and theories, artists, exhibitions and movements

- Ability to analyse themes and concepts

- Ability to express oneself adequately and in a language appropriate to the subject being dealt with.

It will be assessed as excellent the performance of those students achieving an organic vision of the course contents, the use of a proper specific language.

It will be assessed as average the performance of those students showing mostly mechanical of the subject, not articulated synthesis and analysis capabilities, a correct but not always appropriate language, as well as a scholastic study of the topics of the course. It will be assessed as barely sufficient the performance of those students showing learning gaps, inappropriate language, lack of knowledge of the matter. It will be assessed as insufficient the performance of those students showing learning gaps, inappropriate language, no orientation and inability to analyse the discipline.

Strumenti a supporto della didattica

As already reported in the bibliography, the PDFs will be available online with the images projected during the lectures. In addition, further relevant materials relating to the course contents may be added.
