The Project
BASELINE is a research project founded by the KBBE theme of FP7. Its overall objective is to provide harmonized and validated sampling strategies, structured as International standard (ex. ISO), to support the European policies in food safety and to be suitable for food producers, in order to collect comparable data to improve quantitative risk analysis of selected biological and chemical agents in five selected food chains: seafood, eggs and egg products, milk and dairy products, fresh meats and plant products.
Objectives of the project
The major output of the project is to generate new knowledge on sampling schemes to collect data for risk assessment by using a mathematical approach. The project has set up a modelling "software", able to establish food safety criteria (POs) based on distribution of biological hazards and related sampling protocol in each of the five food chains studied. The large application of the sampling schemes developed during the BASELINE to verify the compliance to food safety criteria will increase the probability to detect chemical and biological risks in foods before their distribution to consumers, decreasing the negative economical impact on both food producers and general society due to food recalls and foodborne diseases, respectively.
About the 2nd workshop
The 2nd workshop of the BASELINE project will be organised in Parma at European Food Safety Authority-EFSA premises. The main objective is to present and discuss the new knowledge generated by the BASELINE project activities during its four years implementation and in particular to disseminate the final sampling schemes elaborated by the consortium to food authorities useful to orient and improve the future UE legislature on the matter. The food matrixes addressed belong to seafood, eggs and egg products, milk and dairy products, meat and plant products.
Beside this the specific objectives of the meeting are:
- collect final feedbacks from food authorities representatives on the work performed; contribute to shape the future directions of food safety in the light of evidence-based criteria and related risk-assessment based sampling schemes and analytical methods;
- explore new tendencies in risk-assessment-based sampling schemes including alternative analytical methods;
- familiarize with the future harmonised and validated sampling strategies and food safety criteria.
Program rationale
In the morning the Principal Investigator will present the most relevant results and innovative alternatives to the current state of the art, moreover the software tool for predictive models and sampling plans developed by BASELINE will be disclosed.
In the afternoon input from representatives of food authorities on BASELINE safety criteria and sampling plan will be collected and an open discussion on BASELINE inputs to improve food legislation will be stimulated by the coordinator.
