Learning outcomes
The MSc student will acquire basic knowledge on zoology and biology of marine organisms and advanced knowledge and skills on the life history traits, life and reproductive cycle of marine biological resources that are of priority for fishery and acquaculture. At the end of the course, the MSc student will be able to: - describe and integrate biological data on marine animals in the framework of ecosystem sciences; - use basic and advanced knowledge for conserving and managing marine ecosystems; - use advanced knowledge and skills in applied fishery science for the monitoring and environmental-friendly management of fishery resources
Course contents
Module: Biology of fishery resources (3 CFU)
General introduction to the environmental-friendly management of fishery resources, with special focus on those of the European and Adriatic Sea. Data on the systematics, morphology, physiology, ecology (demersal and pelagic resources), spatial-temporal distribution, life cycles, ontogenetic shifts of molluscs (Bivalvia and Cephalopoda), crustaceans, cartilaginous fish and finfish. Insight and focus on the biology of fishery resource species of high priority for the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea using case studies and research/review papers published on peer-reviewed journals.
Module: Fishery Technologies (1 CFU)
Fishery technologies, fishery gears, concepts of catchability, vulnerability and seasonality of fishery resources.
Module: Laboratory of Biology of Fishery Resources (2 CFU)
Laboratory of taxonomic identification of commercial species
Laboratory of filed sampling (at sea) and mapping
Laboratory of life-history traits assessment
Laboratory of tissue sampling for multidisciplinary analysis (otoliths, fin rays and spines, soft tissues)
Laboratory of ageing of individuals by analysis of year increments in otoliths and fin rays/spines
Laboratory of DNA barcoding for the molecular identification of species and seafood products
