Learning outcomes

At the end of the integrated course Biomedical research: introduction and philosophical issues (3 modules) students are able to
- Know in general terms the characteristics of biomedical research and the career of the researcher
- Know the outlines of the debate in the philosophy of medicine, particularly with regard to the concepts of disease, health and quality of life, evidence, objectivity, pluralism
- Recognise and critically evaluate the assumptions and values underlying scientific practice
- Reflect critically on biomedical research within the social and economic context

Content of this module, Philosophical Issues in Biomedical Research

1. What is evidence quality: Evidence-Based Medicine paradigm, reasons and criticisms

2. Objectivity of research. Can science be value-free?

3. Facts and ethical-pragmatic values in research: case studies

Assessment methods

Oral colloquium on the three modules of the integrated course. The interview assesses the acquisition of the knowledge and skills described in the course objectives.

This course is an elective and will result in a pass or fail, not a grade in thirtieths.
