98884 - PRINCIPI DI CONTROLLO E GESTIONE DELL'IMPATTO AMBIENTALE

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Docente: Ivano Vassura
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: CHIM/12
  • Language: Italian

Learning outcomes

The course aims to introduce the main environmental aspects related to production activities. Students will know the regulatory context relating to environmental discipline and will be able to understand the voluntary technical standards for the control and management of the environmental impacts. They will know the fundamentals of management of waste, as well as the main methods of characterization and monitoring of waste matrices for the purpose of their valorisation or disposal.

Course contents

Module 1: Basic concepts on the analysis and management of emissions from industrial plants. Understanding and expression of the chemical data in the technical documentation (e.g., reading of standards relating to emission limits, test reports, technical standards for emission control).

Module 2. Basic concepts of the environmental chemistry: structure and chemical-physical characteristics of the main environmental compartments (atmosphere, hydrosphere). Biogeochemical cycles and pllutants of greatest interest for environmental protection.

Module 3: Fundamentals of Italian and European legislation in the field of environment, an introduction of the life cycle perspective applied to products and processes. Practical exercises on reading and understanding environmental authorization and certification documents for production activities, such as environmental management systems, environmental labelling and declarations, Environmental impact assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).

Prerequisites

Elementary mathematic functions: exponentials, roots and logarithms. Knowledge of the main physical parameters and units. Balancing and knowing the main chemical reactions. The equation of state of perfect gases. Partial pressures of gases. Solution equilibria. Henry's law. Definitions of acids/bases and pH. Solubility of ionic solids. Nomenclature of organic compounds. Basic functions of the Office package.

Readings/Bibliography

Teaching material (power point presentations and, if necessary, scientific reports, environmental declarations, peer-review articles, etc.) will be available online on the Platform Virtuale (https://virtuale.unibo.it/) for all the students enrolled in the course. Any passwords necessary to access the documents will be provided by the teacher.

Suggested

Although recommended to the students for widening their knowledge of the various topics, these books are not formally adopted as textbooks or fully followed:

Colin Baird, Michael Cann, Environmental Chemistry, Freeman, Ed 2012

Teaching methods

Frontal lesson and exercises in class through reading and discussion of technical documents. During the practical exercises desktop computer may be used to explore databases and to adopt calculation software. During the course, external experts (lecturers from companies) may be involved or educational visits may be organised.

Assessment methods

The assessment method consists in a write exam at the end of the course, which ascertains the acquisition of the expected knowledge and skills. The test consists of open-ended questions, multiple choice questions and exercises.

The test is considered passed with a minimum score of 18/30 points. Honors (laude) may eventually be awarded in the event of a particularly worthy test.

In order to take the exam, it is necessary to enrol through "Alma exams", in observance of the established deadlines. Those who fail to enrol by the scheduled date are required to promptly notify the problem to the Teachers in charge (and in any case before the official closure of the enrolment lists). It is up to the teacher to admit, or not, the student to take the test.

Teaching tools

Projector, PC, whiteboard and free apps for smartphones.

Students who are affected by a learning disability (DSA) and in need of special strategies to compensate for it are kindly requested to contact the Teacher, to be referred to the colleagues in charge and get proper advice and instructions.
