B2915 - Supramolecular Chemistry Techniques and Methods for the Study of Drugs

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology (cod. 5986)

Learning outcomes

The goal of the course is to provide the industrial pharmacist with the concepts and experimental tools used to investigate the supramolecular phenomena involved in drug/molecular target interactions. The student will familiarize with nucleic acids and proteins chemistry, the chemical and physical factors ruling supramolecular processes, the techniques used in supramolecular investigation.

Course contents

Supramolecular chemistry concepts: molecular recognition, cooperativity, self-assembly and self-organization.

Determination of binding constants: UV-Vis and NMR methods.

Calorimetric titrations (ITC).

NOE and diffusion NMR (DOSY) and their applications in supramolecular chemistry.

Circular dichroism for the investigation of biomolecules in solution and their supramolecular behaviour.

Aminoacids, peptides, proteins, nucleotides and oligonucleotides: preparation and supramolecular behaviour.

Nucleic acids and proteins sequencing.

Peptides and oligonucleotides as drugs: selected examples.
