Course contents

Not all skin is the same: sensitive, prone to acne, particularly dry or wrinkled, or more specifically subject to dermatological alterations, pathologies and side effects from therapies. This is why it needs appropriate care, specific products and regular treatments to appear healthier and more beautiful. The contents of the course will therefore be divided into:

  • Description of the main skin pathologies (inflammatory, infectious and degenerative/neoplastic) that can be localized throughout the integument, including skin appendages (nails and hair). The most common active ingredients for dermatological use and the most suitable vehicles for skin sites will be detailed, considering that topical treatments must take into account both the pathology to be treated and the anatomical district in which it is located (12h module; Prof. Maria Bianca Piraccini).

  • Functional cosmetics: moisturizing, nourishing, exfoliating, for skin blemishes and irritations; body care products: skin purifiers, detergents; hair care products: anti-dandruff shampoos, hair loss shampoos, conditioners. Dermocosmetics in fragile patients: the importance of dermocosmetics in cancer patients, patients with psoriasis and children. Neurocosmetics: a new skincare approach (24h module; Prof.ssa Sabrina Angelini).

  • Role, function and correct use of dietary supplementation in skin health with particular reference to oxidative stress and skin aging. Cosmeceuticals: hyaluronic acid, retinol, Vitamins C and E, azelaic acid, ceramides, caffeine, escin, phyto-cosmeceuticals. Nutricosmetics: Vitamins A, C, D, E, Coenzyme Q, phytocomponents with nutricosmetic action, algae as nutricosmetics (12h module; Prof.ssa Silvana Hrelia)

Teaching methods

Theoretical lessons will be conducted in a classroom equipped with multimedia equipment, with the main use of slides in PowerPoint format. Students will be provided with an electronic version of the slides presented during the lessons.

Assessment methods

The examination test is orally administrated and consists of one or more questions on the program. The number of questions may vary according to the level of preparation and in-depth study of the subject highlighted by the student in the answers.

The oral exam contributes to the determination of the final grade. This test is linked to assessing the achievement of the educational objectives.

Registration for the exam takes place through AlmaEsami in specific opening periods shown on the teachers’ web pages.

The role of class attendance in the learning process is essential as the explanation and vision of images and video can only be partially substituted by the study of textbooks alone.
