Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, students will know the basic elements of the culture and civilization of English-speaking countries; will be able to autonomously develop further analytical-cultural knowledge and skills relating to the society of English-speaking countries.

Course contents

Course Description

This course offers an in-depth exploration of the history, culture, and society of the United States of America. Through a multidisciplinary approach, students will examine significant events, influential figures, social movements, and cultural phenomena that have shaped American civilization. By critically analyzing primary and secondary sources, engaging in class discussions, and conducting independent research, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and evolution of American society.

 

Readings/Bibliography

A reading and film/documentary viewing list will be provided at the beginning of the semester.

Teaching methods

Traditional lectures, Socratic method, viewings and discussions, group work, multimedia presentations, and "flipped" classroom. 

Assessment methods

The exam comprises a writing portfolio and an oral presentation on topics during the course.

**Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of total classes.

Marks
Students who demonstrate an excellent comprehension of the written and oral texts proposed and produce well-researched written and oral work in a clear, correct and communicative English will obtain an ‘excellent’ mark (28-30).

Students who demonstrate a good comprehension of the written and oral texts proposed and produce correct written and oral work will obtain an ‘average’ mark (23-27).

Students who demonstrate a superficial understanding of the written and oral texts proposed with adequate but not written and oral work will be given a ‘pass’ mark (18-22)

Students who are unable to demonstrate an adequate understanding of the written and oral texts proposed and whose written and oral production is incorrect, difficult to understand or with major grammatical, lexical or phonological errors will get a ‘fail’ mark. 

Teaching tools

Course specific PPT presentations, films & documentaries, and podcasts. Assignments and activities will be carried out both in class and at home.

Most if not all printed and audiovisual material used in class, as well as resources for the specific topics tackled in class, will be made available on the Virtuale e-learning site.
