Learning outcomes

The laboratory aims at helping the students to develop: the ability to comprehend and analyze the category of gender as a methodological tool for the understanding of the international and transnational dynamics; basic knowledge on issues of large interest in the fields of social and political sciences and political history as well; the ability to comprehend the methodological and theoretical aspects concerning the scientific literature in the field of international and transnational studies; the ability to understand the political, social and cultural dynamics concerning the development of women’s global movements, the role of transnational and non-governmental organizations, and the role of public and private actors in the international space.

Course contents

Students attending the laboratory should read and critically analyze documents and/or scientific essays on the topic of the relationship between gender and international politics. In particular, the readings assigned will focus on such topics as gender and international theory, women's transnational movements, a gendered perspective on violence, war, peace, peace-keeping processes, human rights, gender and international migrations, gender, and globalization. The laboratory aims at helping students to understand, according to an interdisciplinary perspective and to the scientific literature, the most relevant political and social processes in the international arena. Students are also required to understand and analyze the most important public documents published by relevant international organizations with a particular emphasis on United Nations documents and reports.

Articles and essays will be uploaded in Virtuale before the beginning of the class.

Teaching methods

Short introduction to the topic chosen for each class.

Critical reading and seminarial work.

Assessment methods

Evaluation on the basis of students' participation, presentations and debates. At the end of the laboratory, students will be required to write a final paper on one of the topics discussed in class.

Students are required to attend the laboratory. Class attendance is mandatory.
