90171 - Biology and Genetics Lab-based Course (L-Z 3)

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 5904)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, the Student has gained experience in the main methods of cell biology, general and molecular genetics applied to biomedical sciences. In particular, he/she is familiar with the fields of application and limitations of the main techniques used in cell biology, with a focus on cell cultures, biotechnology and the use of transgenic animals. He/she has learnt to recognise the elements of a gene in a real DNA sequence, is able to consult the main molecular genetics banks available online, has performed a simple DNA extraction and discussed the rationale behind the method, knows how to design a polymerase chain reaction experiment to amplify DNA and is able to solve problems of hereditary transmission of Mendelian characters. They have learnt to reconstruct the pathway from experimental data to the construction of current basic knowledge in the biomedical field, to evaluate the methodological aspects of knowledge by taking a critical approach to study.
