Learning outcomes
The laboratory activity will be aimed at developing practical-analytical skills in the determination of pollutants, with particular attention to wastewater treatment processes and waste characterization, according to the reference technical regulations.
Course contents
Module 1. Basic concepts of sampling procedures and practical applications. Preparation of complex matrices (solid and liquid) and preliminary chemical-physical characterizations. In particular we will deal with: the separation of suspended and dissolved solids, homogenization of samples, solid/liquid extractions, digestion of the sample, leaching test.
Module 2. Application of spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques to the analysis of regulated contaminants in wastewater and industrial waste.
Module 3. Reading and interpretation of technical documentation such as environmental declarations and environmental permits. Analysis of case studies with critical reworking, and shared discussion.
Readings/Bibliography
- Official/standard methods for analysis and sampling (UNI, CEN, ISO,..).
Teaching methods
Practical laboratory activities supported by preliminary theoretical explanations.
During the exercises, basic IT tools can be used for database analysis and the application of calculation software. Educational visits may be organized during the course.
Assessment methods
The course is intended to be passed after achieving a positive evaluation assigned on the basis of the quality of the work carried out during classes, as well as after having demonstrated the ability to use the notions and tools learned during the course, also through the compilation of any technical reports.
Laboratory attendance is mandatory.
The obligation is considered to be fulfilled attending at least 75% of the laboratory activities.
Teaching tools
Laboratory handouts relating to practical experiences and any other material will be made available in electronic format on the Platform Virtuale (https://virtuale.unibo.it/).
Students who are affected by a learning disability (DSA) and in need of special strategies to compensate for it are kindly requested to contact the Teacher, to be referred to the colleagues in charge and get proper advice and instructions.
