98882 - GESTIONE IMPIANTI CHIMICI

Academic Year 2023/2024

Learning outcomes

The teaching aims to provide knowledge about the functioning mechanisms and management criteria of the main equipment used in the chemical industry. In particular, students will be able to understand the following basic elements of chemical plant engineering: fluid motion and handling devices, heat exchange equipment, mass transfer equipment, staged and continuous contact equipment, auxiliary fluids for chemical plant management, industrial instrumentation for measuring flow, level, pressure, and temperature. Students will acquire basic knowledge of control systems and the fundamental principles of operation of apparatus for the treatment of gaseous effluents.

Course contents

  • Fluid motion and handling devices.
  • Heat exchange equipment.
  • Mass transfer equipment.
  • Continuous contact equipment.
  • Auxiliary fluids for chemical plant management.
  • Industrial instrumentation for measuring flow, level, pressure, and temperature.
  • Management methods for discontinuous, continuous, and semi-continuous chemical reactors and bioreactors.
  • Overview of control systems.

Teaching methods

Classroom lectures and exercises are conducted according to the official schedule.

During the lectures, the above-mentioned topics are presented and discussed. The theoretical aspect is accompanied by numerical exercises conducted in the classroom.

During the exercises, in order to facilitate students in acquiring the ability to perform simple calculations and prepare for the exam, in-class exercises are conducted. Throughout this activity, the instructor gradually increases the difficulty of the problems and clarifies any doubts.

Assessment methods

The final assessment will be via an oral exam. The goal of the exam is to ascertain the full understanding of both the basic principles and the calculation methods addressed in the lectures. The achievement of the main goals of the course will be assessed, specifically:

- the capability to adopt simple calculation techniques and analysis methods, which are presented during the course, in order to understand the working principles of the equipment;

- the capability to use the outcomes obtained by the above basic tools to improve the performances of equipment and processes of the chemical industry.

Teaching tools

The educational material useful for exam preparation is made available to students in electronic format via the internet. To access the educational material, students need to connect to the website: https://virtuale.unibo.it/ .
