93795 - Drawing and CAD for Design

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Land and Agro-Forestry Technologies (cod. 5831)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student knows the basic elements of technical drawing, the fundamentals of computer graphics, the main IT tools for technical drawing (CAD) and the relative application methods aimed at the design of simple rural building works.

In particular, at the end of the course the student is able to understand design documents and to use CAD tools for the representation of agricultural buildings, the related building components and the most important technical details. The ability to use these tools proves to be increasingly fundamental and supportive in the training process and in professional activity, as well as an indispensable requirement for carrying out the practical test of the state examination of qualification for the pursuit of the profession of Doctor of Agronomy and Forestry.

Course contents

The course consists of four teaching units, including frontal lessons supported by computer exercises.

Didactic unit 1. Rural buildings

Expected results: the student knows the main criteria for sizing and designing a typology of rural building

  • Distribution characteristics of the reference rural building;
  • Construction characteristics and sizing criteria of the main functional units of the rural building used as a reference.

Didactic unit 2. Fundamentals of building technical drawing

Expected results: the student knows the conventions for the drafting of the technical drawings for the representation of the projects; the student knows and is able to apply principles of projective geometry, as regards orthogonal projections and sections of buildings.

  • Drawing tools and representation conventions:
  1. UNI formats
  2. line types and weights
  3. dimensions and scales
  4. texts and symbolisms
  • Orthogonal projections
  • Axonometry
  • Prospect
  • Plans, plans, elevations and sections

Didactic unit 3. Computer-aided drawing (CAD) for planning

Expected results: the student knows the functioning of a CAD software and is able to use it for the drafting of drawing and project drawings of simple rural building works, up to the detailed scale of the final design.

  • Fundamentals and main commands
  • Layer management
  • Quotes
  • Layout and print settings

Didactic unit 4. Guided exercises on CAD

Expected results: the student applies what he learned in the previous teaching units through classroom exercises guided by the teacher.

  • CAD redesign of a case-study rural building.
  • Design and dimensioning of a rural building.

Teaching methods

The course includes both theoretical lessons and guided classroom exercises. The theoretical lessons of both modules will be preparatory to the laboratory activities. The latter will be aimed at the creation of a final paper (graphic tables and summary report) and will be carried out individually under the supervision of the teacher.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of an oral test through which the knowledge inherent in the entire course is verified and the documents produced in the context of guided exercises are discussed.
