Learning outcomes

The course provides the basis for understanding and analyzing phenomena related to intercultural and pluri-religious social experience with specific reference to conflicts emerging from the coexistence of different cultural systems. The intense dialogic polarization of the lessons is based on respect for the heterogeneity of the visions expressed, both in content and language. At the end of the course, the student is able to develop an autonomous capacity for judgment on human rights and their declinations from an intercultural perspective and is able to apply the skills acquired to concrete cases, differentiated according to cultures and of the religions they belong to, in a critical way and with sufficient mastery of exhibition techniques.

Course contents

The course aims to investigate the interactions between human rights and religious factors from a comparative point of view to understand to what extent they are compatible with each other or if, otherwise, they do not constitute an obstacle to each other's realization. The topics of the course include: systems of relationship between State and Churches; secularism in the Mediterranean space; Christian confessionism, Ottoman millets and republican secularism; Western constitutional tradition and Islamic religious tradition; religious citizenship; the interaction between religious and state citizenship in religious rights; the role of the State and freedom of religious communities; religious freedom in relations between the European Union and the Mediterranean countries; Islam in Italy; Cultural defense and religious symbols; case studies: Turkey, Egypt, Morocco.

Teaching methods

The lectures will take place by stimulating the participation of the students in order to make the learning dialogic and interactive.

The screening of documentaries on the main issues dealt with in class will be an integral part of the teaching method.

Assessment methods

Attending students can submit a paper of 5 pp. drawn up according to the criteria found on the virtual website.unibo

Upon agreement with the teacher, the topic of the paper is chosen by the student in accordance with the contents of the course.

The presentation of the paper is an integral part of the oral exam.

Attendance to lectures and participation in the debate stimulated by the teacher will affect the final evaluation with 30%.

In particular, the student's ability to actively participate in lessons will be assessed; these skills, added with the achievement of a thorough understanding of the subject covered during the lessons, with the demonstration of critical sense and with adequate verbal expression means, will be evaluated with the maximum scores excellent = A (27-30 with honors) .

Attendance and participation in lessons, associated with a predominantly mnemonic acquisition of the course subject and with not fully satisfactory verbal expression and logical skills, will be evaluated with a score between good (B = 24-26) and satisfactory (C = 21- 23).

Attendance and participation in lectures, associated with minimal acquisition of the course subject and with inadequate verbal expression and logical skills, will be assessed with a sufficient score (D = 18-20).

The absence of a minimum acquisition of the course material combined with inadequate verbal expression and logical skills will be evaluated with insufficient score (E), even in the presence of assiduous attendance and participation in the forum.

Non-attending students

Non-attending students will be assessed above all on their ability to use the reference manual (See the section: Texts and bibliography for non-attending students) to properly expose the course contents. This ability, added with the achievement of a thorough understanding of the subject covered in the course of the lessons, with the demonstration of critical sense and with adequate means of verbal expression, will be evaluated with the maximum scores excellent = A (27-30 with honors) .

A predominantly mnemonic acquisition of the course subject, with not fully satisfactory verbal expression and logical skills, will be evaluated with a score between good (B = 24-26) and satisfactory (C = 21-23).

A minimum acquisition of the course subject, with inadequate verbal expression and logical skills, will be assessed with a sufficient score (D = 18-20).

The absence of a minimum acquisition of the course subject combined with inadequate verbal expression and logical skills will be evaluated with insufficient score (E).
