39204 - Anesthesia Bls

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Dental Hygiene (cod. 8481)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students should know the clinical basis of the most frequent critical events related to anesthesia in outpatient dentistry. In particular, students should be able to: • recognize sudden aggravation events, possibly leading to cardio-respiratory arrest (syncope, acute cardiovascular insufficiency, coma, etc.) and collaborate with the dentist for their treatment • Recognize respiratory and cardiocirculatory arrest  • Know how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers for lay people (BLS) • Know the instruments necessary for BLS • Know how to use the instruments for BLS • Have basic knowledge on the use of the automatic cardiac defibrillator (BLS- D).

Course contents

Main cardiovascular emergencies (pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, initial treatment): hypertensive crisis, acute myocardial infarction, acute pulmonary edema, arrhythmias, pulmonary embolism.
Main neurological emergencies (pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, initial treatment): syncope, hypoglycemia, acute ischemic stroke, subarachnoid haemorrhage, intraparenchymal cerebral haemorrhage, epilepsy.
Principles of basic life support with use of automatic defibrillator (BLS-D). Recognition of cardiac arrest. Chain of survival. BLS algorithms. Practical use of the AED.
Outline of airway management and face mask ventilation.
Upper airway clearing and Heimlich maneuver.
Practical exercises of BLS-D on mannequins: recognition of arrest; correct execution of heart massage; timing and counting of CPR cycles with regular pulse checks; correct positioning and use of the AED; maneuvers to open the airways (cervical hyperextension, jaw-thrust); mouth-to-mouth, mouth-mask, bag-mask ventilation.
