Learning outcomes

Students will demonstrate knowledge of

the fundamental translation tools available to them (diverse grammar resources and dictionaries);

- corpora representing parallel or sufficiently similar texts;

and the appropriate methods for carrying out a high-quality translation (micro- and macro-structuring, drafting and revision of the target text).

They will likewise be able to apply the aforesaid in the translation of a variety of texts, including complex ones, from Italian into L2 English 

They should be able to identify and apply the most appropriate fundamental translation strategies for the communicative functions of the source texts.

Course contents

Students will learn to deal with various genres of source texts, choose the most appropriate strategy available, and follow professional criteria.

Particular emphasis will be placed on professional as well as translation methodology. Students will deal with the analysis of source texts, lexical and terminological research, and the selection of appropriate parallel texts, comparing their options, and explaining the logic behind their selected translation strategy.

At a later stage, students will be expected to prepare and present their own analyses of source texts, to conduct group translations, and to compose and share glossaries.

NB: minimum attendance of 70% of the Course hours is required.


Readings/Bibliography

Texts from different genres will be proposed by the lecturer (marketing, the hotel sector, commercial websites promoting products and services such as regional food, cultural activities, museums, and historical, architectural and archeological sites).

These extracts will be uploaded onto the Course page on the Moodle e-learning platform (Virtuale).

 

 

Teaching methods

Classroom activities will consist in the analysis and preparation of the translation tasks assigned; subsequently students will present, correct and revise their final versions.

Glossaries and other support materials will be prepared outside of class. Students will primarily work in groups and present their work in class.

 

Assessment methods

 During the course, students will prepare:

- An analysis and translation of a short text (about 100 words), commenting on the translation problems they faced and the solutions they chose to adopt (25% of the final grade). This will be held around Week 5 of the course.


- The final written exam (2 hours) will consist in the translation from Italian into English of a text (of approximately 200 words) similar to those studied in class (75% of the final mark).

 

Assessment of the exam

29 – 30L the student has an excellent command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes virtually no mistakes.

27 – 28 the student has a very good command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes only minor mistakes.

24 – 26 the student has a decent command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes some significant mistakes.

21 – 23 the student has only an adequate command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes a number of significant mistakes.

18 – 20 the student has barely sufficient command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes a significant number of serious mistakes.

< 18 the student does not possess the necessary translation and language competencies and should repeat the exam.
