69561 - Translation from Italian into English II (Second Language)

Learning outcomes

Students will learn to use essential translation tools (grammars, dictionaries, and parallel texts) and methods (rephrasing, drafting and revision of the target text). The student will learn to apply these in the translation of a variety of texts, including complex ones, from Italian into English (second language) will be able to identify and apply the most suitable translation strategies for the translation task assigned.

Course contents

Students will learn to deal with a variety of text types and to choose the most appropriate strategy, based on standard best professional practice. The discussion in class will be focus on the relevant professional context and include the other skills that translators needs - in addition to the ability to translate - such as reviewing and formatting the texts, and acquiring new specific knowledge.

Readings/Bibliography

Students will use a variety of different texts that will be provided by the teacher. There is no textbook for this course. Any readings will be provided during the lessons.

Teaching methods

Lessons will be held as a "workshop" with a lot of room given for discussion. The translation work done in class will be predominantly group work. Attendance is compulsory.

Assessment methods

The course ends with a written examination consisting of 2 texts to be translated: from English to Italian and vice versa. The purpose of the exam will be to verify that the student is able to adopt an appropriate translation strategy for the kind of text. The final mark is an average of the marks for the two modules that compose the course.

Assessment of the exam

29 – 30L the student has an excellent command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes virtually no mistakes.

27 – 28 the student has an very good command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes only minor mistakes.

24 – 26 the student has a decent command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes some significant mistakes.

21 – 23 the student has only an adequate command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes a number of significant mistakes.

18 – 20 the student has barely sufficient command of the necessary translation and language competencies and makes a significant number of serious mistakes.

< 18 the student does not possess the necessary translation and language competencies and should repeat the exam.
