81931 - Analysis of the Built Environment

Academic Year 2019/2020

  • Moduli: Antonio Esposito (Modulo 1) Serena Orlandi (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Advanced Design (cod. 9256)

Learning outcomes

The module provides a study of the dynamics of urban development as a tool for the definition of repeatable architectural models on the territory, on the infrastructure network of digital systems necessary for the knowledge and valorisation of architectural, cultural and artistic heritage. At the end of the course the student knows: to understand the dynamics of urban development; to develop competences for the understanding of repeatable architectural models on the territory; to define useful systems and services for the knowledge of the city and necessary for its use.

Course contents

The Systems Design laboratory sees the contribution of the “Architectural and urban Composition” sector combined with the “Industrial design” one and is aimed at the design of interactive systems and products for the city. Today the city and the territories find themselves increasingly confronted with a network of infrastructures of physical and digital systems necessary for the performance of the various functions of contemporary life. Among these, the enhancement of the historical, cultural and artistic heritage that requires a more intense and more varied fruition than has happened in the past. In our specific case, the museum system of our University will be at the center of planning

considerations and actions, in order to aim for its more effective use than it currently does.

Understanding the dynamics of urban development by using them as an engine for defining repeatable architectural models in the area: pavilions, info points, boxes to support the urban museum system, support structures for urban mobility (for buses, trams, cycles, motorcycles, cars ...), definition of digital interactive systems useful for the knowledge of the city etc ..., will be some of the ways of implementing the practices of reading and modification of the existing.

Cities are becoming more and more digitized organisms and for this reason it is necessary to merge the disciplines that aim at the knowledge and development of the city with a particular emphasis on public space and the disciplines that deal with innovation and development of hypermedia products . The combination of Design and Composition will lead to the development of prototype projects, characterized by a strong innovation both in terms of structure and technology, which will be consistently included both in historical contexts and in areas of new expansion.

Readings/Bibliography

A specific bibliography will be provided during the course.

Teaching methods

The course will be developed through practical activities aimed at analyzing the built environment of the selected case study. Practical exercises will be complemented by theoretical contribution to supporting design activity.

Assessment methods

Seminars for showing and discussing the result of the practical activities, during the period and at the final exam.

Teaching tools

Frontal lessons with slide projection, audio and / or video reproductions; practical exercises directly related to the themes of analysis, reading and representation of urban phenomena
