12939 - Cellular Physiology

Academic Year 2018/2019

  • Docente: Marco Caprini
  • Credits: 3
  • SSD: BIO/09
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (cod. 8519)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will have a broad knowledge of cell physiology. The student will know the basic concepts of ion fluxes through the plasma membrane in excitable cells, of the signal transduction pathways in sensory receptor cells and of the structural and functional plasticity of the synapses. Moreover, the student will acquire the basic information on how to use the principal functional, molecular and cellular techniques to measure the ion channels expression and biolectrical signals from a cell population or a single cell.

Course contents

Concept of cellular homeostasis; principles of permeation of molecules through the plasma membrane; passive and active transport mechanisms ; techniques for the study of plasma membrane ion transport; structure-function relationship of ion channels; voltage-gated ion channels; analysis of cellular functions through the study of ion channels; analysis of functional, molecular and cellular processes through the study of ion channels;

Teaching methods

The course is organized in groups of frontal lessons

Assessment methods

The verification of the learning ability will be assessed only through a final oral exam on one of the arguments of the learning program.

The final mark for teaching 87603-Cellular Biochemistry and Physiology will be calculated as the weighted average of the marks obtained in the modules that constitute the teaching.

Prof. Porcelli, responsible for the teaching of Cellular Biochemistry and Physiology, will communicate to the student the final grade via e-mail and will proceed with the verbalization only after receiving an email of acceptance of the vote by the student.

Teaching tools

Power-point presentations for lectures and scientific papers presentation will be used as teaching supports. All teaching material presented in class will be made available to students in electronic format.
