Course contents

The French language and culture module aims to boost your knowledge to a B1.1 level (even from A1 level). The course will develop the four skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking through intensive practice and a communicative and action-oriented approach.

The course will focus on:

  • reading comprehension of documents chosen in the light of current themes in French society
  • oral comprehension of radio and television extracts
  • written production of texts from a range of contexts
  • speaking skill exercises to enhance language expression
  • expansion of vocabulary for different situations in everyday life
  • grammatical skills : comparison of different grammatical structures, syntax and morphology between the source language and target language to ensure linguistic quality without interference.

Teaching methods

The French language and culture module will focus on practical exercises in the classroom (individual / group work) and written homework assignments every week (via the Moodle e-learning platform) to reach autonomy in language skills.

The French language module will be supported by laboratory exercises ( pronunciation, vocabulary and grammatical skills) in close collaboration with the lecturer (compulsory).

The grammar preparation provided within the course must be completed autonomously by the student (see Bibliography).

Students must attend 70% of the class and active participation is required.

Assessment methods

The written test includes vocabulary, grammar, oral comprehension, written examination (about 2h30).

The oral examination includes:

  • discussion of the written exam
  •  culture : questions relating to readings listed in bibliography.

The use of dictionaries is not permitted.

The final registered mark will be an average of each subject’s mark : written french exam / oral french exam / french italian dialogue interpreting.
