Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire
Student will gain a qualitative and quantitative knowledge on the main classes of marine pollutants, namely the sources, environmental effect/fate and analytical methods. On this basis, it is able to define the best strategies for assessing the quality of the marine environment and prevent pollution and ecosystem damage.
Contenuti
- Introduction to marine pollution: which are the most relevant problems and identify effects on society and the environment.
- Fugacity models and pollutants partitioning.
- Pollution deriving from organic matter: BOD, COD, organic load
- Heavy metals: in-depth study of the Minamata Bay case
- Synthetic organic compounds: Oil spills, persistent pollutants, emerging pollutants, new problems.
- Plastics and solid waste: Types of materials, properties, effects on the marine environment and possible solutions.
- Historical examples and topics on request: Case studies and more in-depth discussion on selected topics with students.

The course includes lectures, in-depth study of scientific articles and examples of case studies.
Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento
The exam will be written and will aim to verify the achievement of the main educational objectives. The student must be able to understand the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the various types of pollution treated.
Strumenti a supporto della didattica
The lessons will be held with the aid of computer supports for the projection of texts and images. The course slides and video are usually left available to students at the end of each lesson.
