Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

According with UN 2030 SDG n. 11, our cities and human settlements have to become more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. At the end of the course the student will know how to interpret the characteristics of the contemporary city in a changing climate. The student will know the main available tools and methods to understand, plan and design adaptive communities, taking into account the peculiarities of diverse context (urban, rural, island mountain). Greening and ecosystem services will be explored as strong driver of resilience and sustainability, while principle of environmental and climate justice will be integrated throughout the course.

Contenuti

The course will begin with an introduction to planning principles, processes, methods and tools to support students understanding around the concept of sustainability, resilience and planning.

Planning will be considered in both rural and urban environment considering those as complex socio-ecological system. Around the idea of planning the course will touch upon the following topics:

- Planning in a changing climate, but how is the climate changing?

- Climate and environmental justice

- Climate risks in urban and rural areas

- Urban areas: greening the city

- Rural regeneration theory and practice from case studies and projects

- Landscape management and values

Slide will be distributed to students as main reference material.

Specific content will be shared through from scientific articles.

Additional material such as books media article or podcasts will be provided to the students upon needs

Metodi didattici

Theoretical approach will be mixed with interactive classes and practical exercises in classes

Theoretical part:

The course deals with planning and management of complex urban and rural socio-ecological systems, analysing the problems of the natural and built environment and techniques for developing planning tools, at different scales. The theoretical presentation of the principles and rules dealt with in the lessons is completed through seminars with the participation of experts presenting plans and good practices.

Interactive classes:

The theoretical part will be mixed with interactive, non-formal education methods that will increase peer to peer learning opportunities

There will be an oral exam at the end of the course
