Contenuti

The objective of the module is to offer complex, descriptive and analitical knowledge about the historical conditions under which the new democracies of East-Central Europe (ECE) have been adjusting to the global world order in the first two decades after the change of regimes, while developing their new foreign policies. Due attention will be devoted to the inter-relation between historical heritage, geo-political and socio-economic endowements of ECE region on the one hand and the new options of foreign policies, on the other. The new attitudes and roles of ECE countries in international institutions as e.g. UN, OECD, WTO, IMF/IBRD and NATO will also be highlighted.

Beside the effects of global environment the course will focus on the regional aspects of cooperation between the countries of the region. Factors of regional cohesion along with traditions of regionalism will be explained, with special regard to national and sub-national actors as well as various forms of regional, inter-regional and sub-regional cooperation. Within the course's structure, certain lectures will cover regional policies of the European Union, regional dimensions of the doctrines and activities of other European institutions as the Council of Europe and OSCE, while in seminars, particular case studies will be presented by students about regional and sub-regional initiatives (CEI, Alps-Adria WG, Visegrad Four, Quadrilaterale, etc.) as well as a variety of cross-border cooperation networks between neighbouring nation states and sub-national entities.
