By the end of the course the student: knows the fundamental categories and practices of contemporary art, both in terms of technical-linguistic and theoretical aspects; understands the role assumed by the visual arts in the transition between the 19th and 21st centuries, in their specific development and relation to the parallel trends of other artistic disciplines; is able to understand the contribution made by contemporary art to the development of visual culture with particular attention to technological, media, and social issues.

Course contents

This course addresses twentieth-century artistic practices aimed at overcoming traditional representation and artistic techniques. Beginning with the experimentation with new media and materials within the historical avant-gardes (Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, Dada etc.), the many ways in which everyday objects, the body, the environment and technologies have been used or reinvented by the most important artists of the second half of the twentieth century up to the latest trends will be illustrated. Special attention will be paid to artistic practices that redefine the work as a physical and mental experience, soliciting direct participation of the viewer.
