Learning outcomes

Describe the fundamental stages of development from infancy to adolescence, as well as the auxologic methods used to diagnose growth disorders. Describe the clinical manifestations, etiology, epidemiology, risk factors, natural history, diagnosis, staging, prognostic indicators and management of the major pediatric diseases, with emphasis on those most commonly encountered in the clinical practice. Identify the major diagnostic and therapeutic options for each encountered clinical scenario, recognizing the impact of age on disease manifestation and treatment. Summarize decision-making algorithms for a correct differential diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment choice. Recognize conditions for referral to genetic counselling. Appreciate how to manage the transition to adult healthcare for children with chronic diseases.

Assessment methods

Oral examination

To pass the examination the student is requested to show a basic knowledge of physiological and pathological processes regulating the growth and the development of children. To know in details the most common pathological conditions of infancy and to be well trained in discussing pediatric clinical cases. To summarize decision-making algorithms, provide a correct differential diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment choice of the most common pediatric diseases.

The purpose of the oral exam is to verify the student's ability to apply his or her knowledge and to make the necessary logical-deductive connections. Gradation of the final grade: Preparation on a very limited number of topics covered in the course and analytical skills that emerge only with the help of the teacher, expressed in an overall correct language → 18-19; Preparation on a limited number of topics covered in the course and ability to autonomous analysis only on purely executive matters, expression in correct language → 20-24; Preparation on a large number of topics covered in the course, ability to make independent choices of critical analysis, mastery of specific terminology → 25-29; Basically exhaustive preparation on the topics covered in the course, ability to make autonomous choices of critical analysis and connection, full mastery of specific terminology and ability to argue and self-reflection → 30-30L.
