Learning outcomes

The course will focus on the political, military and economic reflections on peace and war of some of the most important thinkers of modernity. At the end of the course students will also know the most important “isms” of contemporary and modern political debate on peace and war.

Course contents

1) The first part of the course will be based on the analysis of history of modern and contemporary political thought from the perspective of the political concept of peace and war.

The course will not only focus on the texts based on the political concept of peace and war by the main Western political thinkers.

2) The second part of the course will deal specifically with some important internationalist works. The texts that will be covered in this seminar channel - a total of 12 hours - will be communicated by the lecturer during the course.

Teaching methods

The teaching is divided into sections. One section consists of lectures (16 hours) and aims to introduce students to the acquisition of basic conceptual and theoretical tools through the reading and conceptual analysis of classic texts of internationalist political thought.
The other section (12 hours) - the seminar section - consists of introductory lectures, individual readings of articles or essays and in-class presentations and discussions by students of some fundamental works of internationalist political thought indicated by the lecturer.

Assessment methods

In-class exam. The exam is aimed at assessing the student’s level of knowledge of some of the most important topics addressed by the course, as well as her/his ability to critically analyse and verbally articulate them and her/his level of understanding of the texts.The ability of the student to achieve a coherent and comprehensive understanding of the topics addressed by the course, to critically assess them and to use an appropriate language will be evaluated with the highest grades. Gaps and deficiencies in one or more of those components will result in lower grades. The absence of a minimum level of knowledge of the contents of the course, combined with inadequate language and lack of critical abilities will result in a fail gradin
