14041 - Biochemistry Lab-based Course

Academic Year 2021/2022

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 5708)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student acquires methodological and applicative elements useful for integrating the knowledge gained in the courses of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Course contents

The initial part of the course will be devoted to the discussion of several laboratory techniques:

Techniques for the study of the structure of proteins

XRD, NMR, cryo-EM

Main analytical techniques used in biochemistry

Spectrophotometry

Fluorescence

Purification and separation techniques

Ultracentrifugation

Electrophoresis

Western Blotting

In the end, two different lab activities will be performed:

  • computer lab on proteins' strucutre
  • biochemical lab on enzymatic kinetics and proteins' quantification.

Readings/Bibliography

PowerPoint presentations supplemented by personal notes can provide useful support for the study of the subject.

Teaching methods

Frontal and online lessons based on Power-Point presentations

Assessment methods

The laboratory course program is not included in the exam of the I.C. of Biochemistry.

Students should write a brief report containing the analytical data on enzymatic kinetics and proteins' quantification.

Teaching tools

All lessons will be supported by Power-Point presentations, made available before the lessons.
