Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will have acquired the fundamental knowledge to critically evaluate and interpret the results of the more used diagnostic approaches in hepatic, cardiovascular and haemostasis pathologies.

Course contents

LABORATORY TESTING FOR IN SUPPORT OF THE DIAGNOSIS OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

Markers of lipid profile and hypertension for the determination of cardiovascular risk; markers of acute myocardial infarction

PRENATAL DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Screening tests (Bi and Tri- tests); NIPT (non invasive prenatal testing)

STEM CELLS FROM CORD BLOOD

Stem cells, selection and donation, harvest, fields of use.

NEONATAL SCREENING

Principles and main application for phenylketonuria, congenital hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, widened screening.

GENETIC TESTING

Biochemical techniques (for cistic fibrosis, phenilketonuria, thalassemias), Molecular techniques: Indirect genetic tests (length polymorphisms, SNP); Direct genetic tests (known mutations search, unknown mutations search). Diagnostic applications, NGS, panels/clinical exome. NIPT (non invasive prenatal testing).

LIQUID BIOPSY AND CIRCULATING TUMOR MATERIAL SEARCH: CELLS, DNA, RNA

Teaching methods

Frontal classes, visualization of movies showing clinical laboratory testing, discussion of clinical cases.

Assessment methods

Oral examination.

The final mark of the integrated course Clinical Pathology II will be the average of the marks obtained in the exams of Applied Clinical Pathology, Genetic Clinical Pathology and Techniques of Clinical Pathology 2.
