Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the students should know the literature of the 20th Century and the contemporary literature. Moreover, they should be able to understand and contextualize a text in German language.

Course contents

The course deals with authors and works characterized by „turning-points“ and „threshold-processes“ and it considers German literature from the beginning of the 20th Century up to today in its literary forms and expressions (above all novels and poetry). In particular, the course will analyse works by these authors: Arthur Schnitzler, Georg Trakl, Else Lasker-Schüler, Thomas Mann, Karl Wolfskehl, Nelly Sachs, Paul Celan, Ingeborg Bachmann, Elias Canetti, Paula Ludwig, Stella Rotenberg, Julya Rabinowich, Katja Petrowskaja, SAID, Monika Rinck, Durs Grünbein and Yoko Tawada.

Lectures and seminars.

Assessment methods

Students will be required to present a paper.

The oral exam consists of 3 questions; the first question is based on the paper prepared during the course.
