Students will gain basic knowledge on accounting

Course contents

This course is designed for students that never studied accounting or students that learned accounting in another language and need to learn the relevant vocabulary in English.

The course gives an overview of financial accounting and explores the following main topics:

  • Describes what accounting is and its purposes;
  • Describes financial statements and explains how they are interrelated
  • Briefly summarizes key accounting concepts, principles and International Accounting Standards;
  • Describes the bookkeeping process and the effects of transactions on the financial statements;
  • Introduction to cost accounting.

Readings/Bibliography

Marshall, McManus and Viele (2014), Accounting. What the Numbers Mean, 10th Edition, McGraw-Hill International Edition. Also the eight edition of the book is fine.

Teaching methods

A combination of lectures and interactive classes based on exercises. If applicable the teacher will also use case-study discussion.
