- Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Mechanical Engineering (cod. 0938)
Learning outcomes
The outcomes of the course are to provide the advanced knowledge, the methods and the tools useful for the correct design and verification of the mechanical components such as the bearings, the supports, the gear transmissions, the power connection elements and their materials. At the end of the course the students will be able, for example, to select the most appropriate type of power shaft sand the most convenient model of front motorbike suspensions by applying both traditional and modern methods of calculating and using the FEM program.
Course contents
Fatigue design and verification of components.
Belts transmissions.
Axles and shafts.
Basic of static an dynamic of motorbikes.
Motorbike front suspension design.
Applications of structural adhesives.
Design by applying the FEM method.
Experimental tests and evaluation of results.
Reliability and safety analysis of components.

Teaching methods
The lectures concern the advanced problems of the mechanical design
of products and systems. The practising are collective and concern
the application and the practical solutions of the theoretical
problems proposed during the theoretical lectures. Some
practise lectures will be held into the DIN laboratory or using FEM
programs in order to solve the problems, presented during the
theoretical lectures, by experimental and numerical point of view.
Assessment methods
The exam consists in a written part and in an oral one. The written part consists in the solution of three exercises in which, both the conceptual and the numerical results, will be evaluated. The oral part consists in a discussion about the written part and about the theoretical arguments dealt during the lectures.
