Abstract
The SCARER project aims to improve the resilience of Italian citizens to natural disasters such as floods and droughts through effective risk communication based on the active involvement of affected communities. Integrating historical and social sciences, SCARER analyses the history of hydrogeological risk communication and the perception of these issues in Italy today, to develop and share new strategies for communicating hydrogeological risk. The project is coordinated by the University of Ferrara, which is in charge of the historical research, and involves the Universities of Trento and Bologna for the sociological part. Through the dissemination of results and the relationship with stakeholders, the project aims to improve risk management and interactions between institutions, first responders, scientists, citizens, and the media, ensuring a more coordinated and effective response to future flood and drought emergencies.
