Abstract
The research project KNOW.it stems from a need felt in the context of cultural heritage, also made more explicit in recent years by projects proposed by the European Community. The National Recovery Plan (PNRR) and National Complementary Plan (PNC) have provided for investments and reforms aimed at fostering a lasting and sustainable development of the economy. In particular the mission "Digitization, Innovation, Competitiveness and Culture" supports digital innovation as the core of the transformation of business production processes. The Horizon Europe - Work Programme 2023-2024 CULTURE, CREATIVITY and INCLUSIVE SOCIETY, provides for the investment of substantial amounts of money for the digitization of cultural heritage (collections, monuments, buildings, etc.) recognizing its benefits in terms of preservation, accessibility and support for cultural and creative innovation. These investments aim to implement the use of European cultural heritage through digitized objects and convey its social value not only in Europe, but also overseas. For this reason, the project intends to find a way to reclaim the architectural heritage of Italian origin, as a product of the culture that generated it, a task that may be difficult since this heritage is spread around the world and, for the same reason, also little known. In this framework, a virtual fruition seems to be the only possible instrument because it can recreate the context of origin and hand down uses, forms, manners, techniques and characteristics. The goal is to propose a "virtual comeback" of architectural heritage that is located overseas but rooted in Italian culture, through a hypermedia collection composed of digital models made through ICT, and above all to propose an original form of communication through social objects and social networks to extend knowledge to different categories of users. The pilot case studies are the Brazilian cities of Jaú and Sao Carlos (São Paulo), little known but very rich compared to the architectural heritage that has Italian origins. The two cities were chosen with the aim of spreading the knowledge of the expressive roots of the architectural language of the Italian designers and workers who contributed to its construction and development. This requires the definition of a modus operandi, an activity that is not easy in its application to Cultural Heritage due to the heterogeneity and complexity that has always characterized it. The definition of a methodological path, to be then extended to other cases, is necessary in order to build a virtual collection of an architectural heritage that is physically very far from Italy but, actually, very close. Virtual digital models and social networks are spaces of information and communication, in which the concepts of proximity and distance are annulled and which allow Italy to be at the "centre," telling the memory and projecting into the future.
