Abstract
RiverWatch aims to develop a new disruptive monitoring infrastructure for detecting buoyant plastics in rivers. The projects focusses on the Sarno river, one of the most polluted rivers in Europe and in the world. Together with fixed cameras installations, RiverWatch relies on citizens to be part of the monitoring infrastructure, who can use their mobile phones to take pictures and contributed to the river monitoring. Plastics are detected either by the user themselves during collection, or by cutting-edge computer vision algorithms after being sent to the cloud, allowing also for performing more advanced and comprehensive monitoring related to, for instance, volume and discharge estimation.
