The course aims to cover the most important corporate finance topics related to the investment and financial decisions by the firm. It therefore gives the basics on mathematical finance, investment decisions, portfolio theory, the optimal capital structure and the cost of capital for the firm.

Contenuti

The readings can be found in the Brealey-Myers-Allen textbook (BMA)

  • Introduction. Finance and financial management. Financial instruments. (BMA chapter 1)

  • The role of time. Present value formulas. Payback, IRR, and Net Present Value calculation. (BMA

    chapter 2)

  • Capital budgeting. Evaluating investment opportunities. (BMA chapter 5-6)

  • Stock and bonds. Description and basic evaluation. (BMA chapter 3-4)

  • Exercise session.

  • Risk and diversification. Market efficiency. Portfolio theory. CAPM. (BMA chapter 7-8)

  • Cost of capital. Payout policies and dividends. (BMA chapter 9; 16)

  • The (optimal) capital structure. The role of debt. (BMA chapter 17; 18)

  • Capital raise; IPOs; venture capital and private equity. (BMA chapter 15)

  • Final valuation test.
