  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)

Learning outcomes

The course will give competencies and understanding in medicinal, food and agrochemical organic products.

The student can apply his/her skills to chemical areas of great economic importance in local and national environment.

Course contents

Description of properties and function of selected chemical compounds in medicinal  and agro-food chemistry.

Prerequisites: basic knolowledge in organic chemistry on propereties and reactivity of main functional groups, and structure-properties relationships of organic compounds.

Knowledge of saccharides, proteins and lipids.

The course is organized in two modules

Module 1

Medicinal Chemistry

What is an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API)

Analysis of the drug discovery & development processes

Pharmacokinetics, dynamics, and safety.

Case history: antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance phenomena, antiviral, and antipain compounds.

Module 2

Agrochemicals

Pesticides, herbicides, plant groth regulators, and environmental issues.

Sustainability, human & environmental safety and social impact.

 Case studies.
