Learning outcomes
This course aims at introducing the student to the base level of English necessary to build an academic career upon in the field of Economics. The student will be able to read and understand current economic articles and, thanks to the creation of specific economic field related glossaries, handle short open questions to demonstrate their acquired skills.
Course contents
The lessons will deal with four topics:
- Microeconomics: demand and supply; production; consumer choices
- Macroeconomics: GDP; fiscal policy; business cycle
- EU institutions: European Parliament; European Council; Council of the European Union; European Commission; Court of Justice of the European Union; European Central Bank; Court of Auditors
- Finance: venture capital; banking system; stock exchange

Teaching methods
Glossary creation; memorisation strategies for vocabulary; real examples of the use of vocabulary (written texts or audio documents); exercises to apply the acquired knowledge.
Assessment methods
30-minute written exam. The use of dictionaries is not allowed.
At the beginning of the course the English level should be B1. If the overall exam grade of the English language course (Basic English + English for Economics) is equal to or higher than 25/30 the English level is considered to be B2.
The exam includes 28 questions, divided into three parts. A first part is formed of 13 definitions of which students have to write the corresponding term (1 point per answer). In the second part of the exam students have to write the definition of two terms (max. 2 points per answer). The third part consists of an open cloze test with 13 gaps to fill in (1 point per answer). The cloze test focuses on idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs. The grade is expressed in thirtieths.
