The detection of ionizing radiations is an important task in a number of technologically and socially relevant activities, spanning from microelectronics to sanitization and sterilization, from industrial quality control to the oil industry, from mining to medicine.

The invention relates to organic semiconductors to be used as intrinsic, direct detectors for ionizing radiations, such as X and gamma rays, neutrons, and charged particles (alpha rays, electrons, positrons, and the like), and to a method for manufacturing such intrinsic, direct detectors for ionizing radiations.

The invention further relates to instruments or complex devices provided with a detector based on, or somehow incorporating, organic semiconductors used as intrinsic, direct detectors for ionizing radiations.

In particular, the instruments according to the present invention are useful as X-ray detectors in medical field, for example in dentistry, medical imaging; in civil field, for example in airports, borders and in analytical techniques, or in R&D or industrial activities.

Their manufacture is simple and more economic than the inorganic intrinsic, direct detectors of the state of the art.

Moreover, their response is linear and reproducible.

They can be also endowed with anisotropic response, allowing to determine the direction of the incident radiation.

Their manufacture is simpler, since they can be solution-grown and quite advantageously on a patterned substrate, provided with the electrical circuit.

They can be transparent and flexible.

They operate in normal conditions, room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

They are long-standing devices and stable in radiation-hard environment.
