Hydrogel-impregnated wound dressings are gauzes and non-woven sponges, ropes and strips saturated with an amorphous hydrogel. Amorphous hydrogels are formulations of water, polymers and other ingredients with no shape, designed to donate moisture to a dry wound and to maintain a moist healing environment. The high moisture content serves to rehydrate wound tissue. This gauzes are indicated for partial- and full-thickness wounds, wounds with necrosis and deep wounds with tunneling or sinus tracts. However, articles published to date show gauzes modified with the addition of antibiotics, chemical compounds with antimicrobial action or at most essential oils like Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia).

The invention consists of a pre-treated gauze with solid hydrogel containing some natural active ingredients, obtained as essential oils production by-products.

The proposed formulation provide antipathogenic action on various bacterial cutaneous pathogens (Staphylococcus spp, Streptococcus spp, Enterococcus spp, Pseudomonas spp) and fungal (Candida spp) resistant to antimicrobials. Furthermore, the pre-treated gauze is able to stimulate a local immune response.

Laboratory studies have investigated the in vitro effect of a rudimentary gauze prototype, demonstrating its cytocidal effects. The data, besides showing very interesting results regarding the antimicrobial action of the gauze, promise a good application on humans. Therefore, the fields of application can be multiple: treatment of bedsores, treatment of postoperative wounds and treatment of burns. Among the main advantages: fast wound healing, prevention of infections caused by bacteria or fungi also resistant to common synthetic drugs.

The pre-medicated gauze, being designed for the treatment of wounds and skin burns, has a very broad application potential. This type of gauze stands out in terms of advantages because:

  • has a soothing action
  • rehydrates the "bed" of the lesion
  • favors autolytic debridement
  • fills the cavities (impregnated, amorphous gauze)
  • facilitates application and removal from the injury.

The pre-treated gauze is able to prevent the development of microbial infections, exerting a cytocidal action on a broad spectrum of bacterial species generally involved in human skin infections. This allows a better management of the wound: the prevention of infections, together with a reduction of aggressive pro-inflammatory responses, allows to complete the healing process in a short time.

Finally, the patented solution allows the gradual release over time of the active ingredients contained in the gel, and therefore a continuous and gradual treatment of the injured skin area. Through a suitable dressing, the patient will be able to heal quickly reducing the period of convalescence and avoiding the health costs related to the development of infected wounds.
