Learning outcomes

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the relation between the legal system and the economic system, specifically to the legal aspects of market regulation and public finance in Europe.

Course contents

The course aims at analysing the general principles of public intervention in economy by addressing the legal frameworks that govern it, the powers and the role of public authorities and their relationships with private organisations.

The course analyses the legal framework of the European Union and the public regulation of services of general interest. The role of private organisations and their agreements with public authorities in the delivery of welfare services will be especially dealt with.

Readings/Bibliography

Students are requested to study all the materials assigned for each class in order to enable discussion and participation. Students are also encouraged to strengthen their preparation by carrying out independent research on the issues addressed during the course. In this respect, students are welcome to contact Professor Santuari to discuss additional readings and research.

Teaching methods

The course intends to combine traditional teaching with discussions and analysis of relevant case law.

Assessment methods

The assessment methods will be as follows:

1.a written examination consisting of both multiple choice questions and open questions

2. a project work to be presented and discussed with Professor Santuari on the day of the examination
